Middle cycles

Sometime during January 2011 I cycled 100k out into Essex. Couldn't believe how many walls I hit after the breakfast I had that morning. I'm talking 4 weetabix, spag bol, eggs, and a banana. Surely that should be enough to do 100k without having to stop. Just realising lately (Sept 2011) after getting into running that you really need food in your system a good few hours before exercise and not just as you're going out the door. Despite having to stop a couple of times I still made ok time at around 4 and a half hours.

In May went for a cycle down to Brighton. Took the back roads so had to stop every few minutes to make sure I wasn't going the wrong way which ended up slowing me down a lot. Also the bike was in serious need of a service so it took me a pitiful 7 hours to get there. People run London to Brighton in quicker times. Was a seriously hot day that day and I got sun burn all down my arms that turned into a nice tan for the rest of the summer. Met Saoirse and her boyfriend for a few cans on the beach. He advised to get clip on pedals if I'm going to be doing any more big cycles as they'll save you a lot of effort. Good idea in theory. Finding the whole clipless pedals area slightly confusing I bought a pair of road pedals and a pair of MTB shoes that summer. This just created more effort so I forgot about big cycles for a while. Phily had some stellar advice when I was looking at buying pedals at the time. But it says these ones are slightly heavier - "ah you're grand, sure just take a dump before you head out and you'll be flying"
